Il Borgo del Pianello, primo insediamento urbano del paese, venne edificato, pare, intorno al 900 d.C., in seguito alla distruzione, da parte dei Saraceni, dell’antica Numistro, situata a valle. Gli abitanti, per difendersi dalle scorrerie dei predoni nelle varie contrade, si riunirono in quest’unico rione difficilmente accessibile, che resero più sicuro edificando un muro, da cui il paese prende il suo attuale nome, munito di due porte, Porta Janna a sud e la Porta, posta nei pressi del torrente sottostante.

The “Borgo Pianello” is the most ancient settlement of the town. Apparently, it was built around 900 A.D., after the distruction of the ancient town of Numistro, located downstream, by the Saracens. To defend themselves from the raids, its inhabitants occupied this one district, that was difficult to reach, and they built a wall to make safer the hamlet, from which the town takes its name. The wall had two gates: Porta Janna, to the south, and the Porta, placed near the underlying stream.
